Airdrieonians F.C Ltd were liquidated 01-MAY-2002
124 years of history at an end.
The Scottish Football League voted on 18-JUN-2002 to reject Airdrie United's bid to replace Airdrieonians FC in the league in the 3rd Division. The town of Airdrie was to lose all conection with Scottish league football. A disgraceful decision!
Chairmen who voted against Airdrie United(The Parcel of Rogues): Ayr United, Alloa, Arbroath, Berwick Rangers, Clyde,Clydebank, Cowdenbeath, Dumbarton, East Fife, East Stirling, Inverness Caley, Morton, Queen of the South, St Mirren, Stranraer and St Johnstone.
Chairmen who voted for Airdrie United(The good guys): Falkirk and Ross County, Brechin City, Forfar, Hamilton, Raith and Stenhousemuir, Albion Rovers, Montrose, Queens Park and Stirling Albion. However Clydebank FC were in administration and looking for a buyer. They had disgraced themselves by being one of the Parcel of Rogues who voted to kill Airdrie United's chances of joining the 3rd Division. Jim Ballantyne the chairman of Airdrie United offered to buy Clydebank for £160,000 if the League Management Committee would agree to let him change the name of Clydebank to Airdrie United, change the strip to an Airdrieonians strip and play league games at New Broomfield, the former Airdrieonians stadium. This was agreed. So Airdrie United can take Clydebank's place in the 2nd Division. Justice at last!
